St Peter's Community Primary School

Year 2

This term in Yellow Class...

Spring term:  Happy New Year! We hope you enjoyed your holiday break.

For our Spring 1 topic, we will embark on another new learning journey; ‘A Day in the Life’. Our topic will explore adult job and career roles in the world around us, as well as those of people close to us. We will focus on acknowledging our own current personal achievements, skills, hobbies and interests, as well as setting ourselves goals of things we would like to achieve in the future. We will be finding out about famous humanitarians Florence Nightingale and Greta Thunburg, and we will also explore jobs children may have taken on at a young age in the past!

Our Stunning Start will take form in the arrival of a daily exciting package, containing props pertaining to different job roles, which the children will need to guess! We will then use these to explore any gender stereotypes or challenge some misconceptions the children may have.

For our Marvellous Middle, we will be visiting Hove Library to take a closer look at the role of a Librarian (February dates TBC). We are also hoping to receive a visit from a local religious leader.

For our Fantastic Finish we invite you to attend an hour of child-led interviews, where the Blue Class and Yellow Class children will pose carefully considered questions regarding your job and career roles. Please speak to a member of staff from your child’s class in order to sign up by Friday 31st January! This includes anyone who volunteers in the local community, may hold a skill from a current or previous job role, new parents/carers, those who work at home etc.

In Literacy, our key text will be ‘The Lonely Beast’ by Chris Judge. We will explore the emotion of ‘loneliness’ and discuss our preconceptions around ‘beast’ characters from other texts, looking at how our opinions may change after reading this story. We will be using this story to help us write newspaper articles and diary entries this half term.

During our ‘Maths No Problem’ lessons we will be starting our ‘Multiplication and Division’ topic, which includes knowledge the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We will be using our knowledge to also create and solve problems and devise our own equations from questions posed. Please note that last half term we covered the topic of ‘length’ instead of starting Multiplication and Division, as previously stated. We will then continue to look at statistics, graphs and the different ways data can be presented, as well as how to analyse it. We will then finish the half term by looking at ‘Mass’ and how to compare the weight of objects.

In Computing we will be continuing our ‘Specialist Unit’ which is designed to teach the discrete learning goals of ICT and Computing, allowing children to start working with tools such as text, images, sound, graphs and videos.

In P.E we will be using a new and exciting teaching platform ‘The P.E Hub’ to help us deliver our lessons. ‘Run Jump Throw’ will focus on sending, receiving, batting, fielding and working as a team. ‘Hit Catch Run’ will look at running, catching and jumping techniques, skills and games.

In PSHE we will be celebrating the month of ‘Different Families, Same Love’ in February, where we celebrate the diversity of our families and the uniqueness of everyone in each class. We will also look at different medicines and how to keeping safe and healthy around them.

On a Tuesday with Miss. Ransley, she will explore how Christians use the Church as a place of worship and we are hoping to receive a visit from a local religious figure from our community. During Spanish, she will help the children to develop their understanding and speaking skills through songs, rhymes and talk partner practice. In Music, she will be using the programme Charanga to help us repeat and create rhythms and beats, as well as to create our own music to perform to others.
