This term in Red Class...
This half term in Red Class we will be exploring the topic ‘Down on the farm’. We will discuss what the children already know about farms and what they would like to learn. Our key story focus will be ‘Farmer Duck’ by Martin Waddell along with other stories such as “Mr. Gumpy’s Outing”, “The Little Red Hen” and “Rosie’s Walk”. Our stunning start to the topic will be to celebrate Chinese New Year over the first week back. This year is the year of the dog. We will also look at farm dogs and the role they play in daily farm life. We will have a Chinese New Year celebration day on Friday 23rd February, where children can come to school dressed in red or traditional Chinese style clothing. We will complete Chinese New Year activities, explore how they celebrate this tradition in China and have a Chinese food taster session in the afternoon! (No need to contribute food, this will be provided).
We will centre all our learning around the topic of farms over this half term, for example, we will discuss the daily routines and roles of a farmer and explore how they are a key feature of our world around us. We will group, sort, count, double and halve farm animals during our Maths sessions, sketch and paint our favourite farm animal, use our small world farm to recreate roles and experiences, use our farmyard role play area to act out scenarios and use imaginative language, take a trip to Plumpton College Farm during lambing season (our Fantastic Finish) and much, much more. We will even experience what it’s like to milk a cow…through the use of rubber gloves and milk cartons!
